Prep School’s Regatta Welcomes Schools From Across the UK
The Andrew Simpson Watersports Centre Portland (ASWC Portland) hosted the Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAPS) Regatta on the 16th and 17th May at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy.
We welcomed a total of 23 schools and 90 sailors for the Under 11’s, plus 28 schools and 110 sailors for the Under 13’s, all from across the UK. The racing consisted of two fleets of boats, the RS Feva Performance Fleet and the RS Zest Junior Fleet, a combination of results from both fleets gives us the overall team prize for the highest placed school on each day.
Wednesday gave us strong winds and cloudy conditions for the young U11 competitors, however this didn’t deter them, and everyone took the challenge on and sailed brilliantly. Our winners of the Performance Category were William James and Joshua John-Ringe from St Peter’s Preparatory School in Exmouth. In the Junior category, Ollie Williams and Poppy Kilpatrick from Churchers College Junior School in Liphook, Hampshire took first, with two teams from Sunninghill Prep School in Dorchester taking second and third. The overall team prize was claimed by Sunninghill Prep School, defending their win from last year.
Thursday’s conditions were a stark difference to the day before, with sunshine and light winds creating a different type of challenge for the Under 13 sailors. Winners from the Performance Category were Sam Webb and Freddie May from Walhampton School in Lymington, with their second team, Santi Crosby and Tom Ling taking second. In the Junior Category, Robert Mawdsley and Gemma Mawdsley from Hoe Bridge School in Woking claimed first place with two first’s and a second place throughout the day – some exceptional results! The overall team prize for the U13 day was won by Walhampton School.
Frances Hide, Sport Event Manager at IAPS said “This year’s IAPS’s Sailing Regatta was another successful 2 days down at the Andrew Simpson Watersports Centre in Portland. Despite some very strong wind on Wednesday, and lack of wind on Thursday, the 200 competitors (50 boats each day) thoroughly enjoyed the event and displayed some very strong sailing skills. Thank you to the ASWC and all of their team for hosting this event on behalf of IAPS”
Ian Stazicker, Deputy Head at Sunninghill Prep School said “Everyone at Sunninghill Prep School was thrilled at the stunning achievements of our young sailors in winning the under 11 Independent Association of Prep Schools Sailing Regatta which was held at the Andrew Simpson Watersports Centre (ASWC) Portlan. Sailing plays a big part in our outdoor education and our great relationship with ASWC is really positive for our pupils and staff. Pupils love their weekly trips to get out on the water at the centre and we’ve even brought sailing into the maths curriculum with an active afternoon working on bearings, co-ordinates and GPS around our school grounds.”
ASWC Portland has been hosting this fantastic event for over four years and is pleased to be hosting the 2019 event as well. Alongside this, they also offer a range of sailing and watersports courses to individuals, schools and groups.
